On the eve of the annual deer hunting festival in the small town of Wheelsy, Sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) has two problems. One is his unrequited love for town schoolteacher Starla Grant (Elisabeth Banks). The other is a comet that has crashed in the woods outside of town, unleashing a slug-like creature that infects Starla's husband, Grant Grant (Michael Rooker). The slugs begin to multiply, infecting all the townspeople, turning them into either voracious zombies or constantly evolving mutants. Pardy, Starla, Mayor Jack MacReady (Gregg Henry) and teenage survivor Kylie Strutemyer (Tania Saulnier) are the only people left uninfected, and they must find a way to destroy the alien menace before it moves from Wheelsy to destroy the entire world.
