At the age of five Tad Trenton (Danny Pintauro) has a well-developed fear of the monsters in his closet. Fortunately his dad Vic (Daniel Hugh Kelly) knows just how to make the monsters go away. But when Tad needs him most Vic is called out of town by a work emergency. He goes with the knowledge that his wife and Tad's mom Donna (Dee Wallace) has been unfaithful with family friend Steve Kemp (Christopher Stone). Donna wants to stop the affair, but Steve didn't take things well. He makes sure Vic knows about the affair, issues threats and vandalizes the Trenton house. While avoiding this Steve, Donna and Tad take their broken car to Joe Camber's (Ed Lauter) place to get the car repaired. But Joe apparently has gone fishing and his wife is visiting her mother. The only one there to greet them is the dog Cujo. Ordinarily the big St. Bernard is a friendly creature but not today. Rabies has gotten its ugly fangs into Cujo who becomes increasingly dangerous. When their old car refuses to start Donna and Tad are trapped inside in the summer heat as Cujo becomes a very real and very deadly monster.
