Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) is a successful attorney who lives and works in Manhattan. He has a good marriage and a happy family home. At a business meeting he meets Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) who works as an editor for a publishing house. When Dan’s family are away for a couple of days, Dan has a brief affair with Alex. Dan is not oat all serious about this, and considers it a casual fling. Alex, however, becomes obsessed with Dan. She pursues him obsessively and refuses to believe that it is over. As events progress, it become obvious to Dan tah Alex is dangerously unstable when she attempts to kill herself when Dan tells her that he wants to go back to his family and normal life. She even begins calling him at home. In a further effort to manipulate him, Alex tells Dan that she is pregnant with his child. Dan tells his wife Beth the truth about the affair, but even this is not enough to persuade Alex to stop her manic behaviour.
