Arnie Cunningham (Keith Gordon) is a dorky teen, until he spots a run-down 1958 Plymouth Fury for sale. Despite his friend Dennis Guilder (John Stockwell) trying to talk him out of it, Arnie buys the car and tries to take it home. His parents, however, refuse to allow him to keep the ugly vehicle in their yard, so Arnie must store it at a junk yard repair shop. Slowly, Arnie's personality starts changing from a dork into a bully, all as the car, which is named Christine, begins repair itself spontaneously and becomes increasingly jealous of anyone associating with Arnie. Arnie meeting a girl named Leigh Cabot (Alexandra Paul) sparks Christine's anger. Arnie also runs afoul of the school's other bullies, led by Buddy Repperton (William Ostrander), who trash Christine. Arnie goes to rebuild the car, but finds it can do the job itself. Christine, and possibly Arnie, then goes on a killing spree, tracking down Repperton's gang and killing them one by one, until Dennis and Leigh begin to realize that it is the car behind the deaths. They set a trap at the garage, and barely escape its wrath before crushing it with a bulldozer.
